Here are today’s top stories at Concord:
- After 25 years as a pillar of Concord, Heads Up Sports is closing its doors. Owner Dennis Danziger says it was a great run, but supply chain issues are making it difficult to keep shelves stocked, and he’s ready to retire and take time off to travel. After a 40-year career in concessions, he didn’t expect the race for the store to last this long, but he has loyal customers who prefer his store to chains and big-box retailers. He is grateful, but ready to move on. (KRON4)
- Looking for someone else to cook for Thanksgiving? Fortunately, several restaurants in the Concord area will remain open during the holidays. Many of them take reservations, so you might want to jump on them. My favorite is LB Steak in San Ramon, but you really can’t go wrong with any of these selections. (Concorde crest)
- The City of Martinez released a statement saying the Clearlake Police Chief Andrew White will become Martinez’s new police chief. It seems to be just a formality that the city council has not yet approved the rental; he is about to do so next week. White has a long and impressive history in public service, including a 15-year career as an “Instructor in Basic Policing and Expedition Academies at Napa Valley College.” Is it too early to say “Welcome, Chief White?” (Claycord.com)
- Two people, at least one of whom lives in Concord, have been arrested after traffic stop revealed marijuana packaged for sale and two loaded firearms in their vehicle. The Concord resident was also a previously convicted felon and a search warrant was issued for his home, where more incriminating evidence was found. (Claycord.com)
- Kristi Yamaguchi’s holiday rink is back in San Ramon this year, just like Kristi Yamaguchi herself! She was at the inauguration of the ice rink that bears her name. Yamaguchi and Mayor Dave Hudson were on hand for Friday’s celebration, which also included performances by local figure skaters and chants by San Ramon Voices. - “Join bestselling author, Edna Castillo, for a local Celebration and book signing” at the Unity of Walnut Creek Bookstore. (15:00)
From my notebook:
- “Pavement Rehabilitation for Grant Street/East Street Pavement Rehabilitation is underway and will move into the next phase of work on Monday, November 14. Phase 2 will focus on construction on the exterior lanes, with traffic being rerouted to use (sic) the interior lanes.” (City of Concord, CA via Facebook)
- The GoodGuys Autumn Get-Together Auto Show Will Return in Pleasanton this year. “The event will feature thousands of vehicles made or motorized in the United States, including custom hot rods, muscle cars, restored classics and trucks from all years, as well as live entertainment, food and local vendors, FREE Kid Zone, autocross races and additional activities for the whole family. (East County today)
- “The Lamorinda Arts Council features paintings by Nicole Reader, photographs by Farzeen Taban, woodturnings by David Fleisig and hats by Denise Goodman in the Art Gallery at Orinda Library during November.” (Orinda’s news)
