December 29 – MANSFIELD – 2022 has been an eventful year in Mansfield.

The University of Connecticut appointed Radenka Maric its 17th president following a unanimous vote at the UConn board meeting on September 28. Her five-year term as president began immediately after the council voted.

Maric had led the university as acting rector since February 1st. She was appointed after the departure of the interim president Andrew Agwunobiwho held the post after Thomas Katsouléasthe 16th president of UConn, stepped down in the summer of 2021.

Agwunobi stepped down as interim president of UConn to become head of the home solutions business for Humana inc.a for-profit health insurance company based in Louisville, Kentucky.

At the meeting of the UConn Board of Directors on September 28President Dan Toscano said Maric rose to the top of a highly competitive candidate pool during the nationwide search for a permanent university president.

“During our discussions after the interview process, it was clear that the unanimous choice was our own interim president. Radenka Maric“, Toscano said. “I got to know her very well, especially in the last nine months when she was acting president. She is a force of nature, deeply committed to UConn, determined to deliver results and go all out when it comes to leading this institution into a future that will be defined by success and achievement.”

A story in progress Mansfield throughout 2022 has been the construction of the new Mansfield Primary School.

The school, located at 134 Warrenville Road in Mansfield Centerhad to be completed in time for the start of the school year on September 6. However, delays in the delivery of essential mechanical and electrical equipment pushed back the completion date for the new school. Although the construction of the new MES building has not been completed, the MES title is already in use.

Children in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first grades attended MES at present Annie E. Vinton Elementary School location. 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders attend MES at present Dorothy C. Goodwin School location.

All primary school students Mansfield Public School District will attend school in the new MES building once it is completed.

Now that 2022 is coming to an end, Town of Mansfield Director Ryan Aylesworth said in the town’s December/January e-newsletter that MES will open to students in early 2023. Members of the Mansfield community are thrilled with the new school.

“This state-of-the-art net zero facility will exemplify the city’s deep commitment to sustainability principles while providing our students and teachers with an exceptional physical environment in which to learn and grow,” Aylesworth said.
