Help navigate the path to retirement and Medicare

SIOUX FALLS, SD (Dakota News Now) – Open Medicare enrollment is ongoing right now.

But with so many plans and so much information available, how do you know which plan is best for you or your parents at retirement age?

In this Avera Medical Minute, we meet a family who is navigating this process right now and how Avera agents can help.

Les Slunecka grew up in central South Dakota and spent most of her life working in the agricultural industry.

He is planning his exit from the labor market soon.

“As I get closer to retirement age, I think it’s important for me to start researching the elements of the insurance industry and how I can figure out how to afford to pay as well as the blankets,” Slunecka said.

He enlisted his daughter, Heather, to help him.

They both found that there was a lot of information available.

“There are so many choices out there, you just don’t know. As well as the franchise and the drugs, and things keep changing,” Slunecka said.

“Insurance in particular is a tough thing to deal with,” Heather said.

This is where Jordan Anderson comes in.

He’s vice president of sales for Avera Health Plans and gets a lot of questions from families about how Medicare can work for them.

“It’s very important to go through this process and educate yourself because the answers to these questions are so unique to your individual needs and not someone else’s,” Anderson said.

Les and his family took that advice and are working with an Avera Health Plans agent to make sure they choose the best option for them.

“Avera has a very good network of people who can help us determine what our needs will be. Our goal will be to join one of the Avera plans that meets our needs because our medical requirements require it, whether it’s Part A, B, C, D or whatever,” Slunecka said.

Anderson says agents are aware of the available plans and the benefits each offers.

Agents also offer a personalized approach to choosing the right insurance plan.

“I think the most important thing is that they get to know you and they’re going to understand what plan is going to meet our needs, your unique needs and your unique situation today and in the near future,” said Anderson.
