MERIDEN — The Meriden Public Library is hosting a comprehensive retirement planning workshop next week.
The workshop will take place on Wednesday, November 30 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the temporary library location at Meriden Mall.
Lou and Jessica Pelletier from Pelletier Senior Planning Academy in Farmington will facilitate the workshop.
Jerry Maust, Manager of Reference Services at Meriden Public Library, organized the event. “Something we’ve been working on for a few years is to meet the needs of the community,” he said.
Maust said the library researched and spoke with local businesses to see what they could contribute to the community. “We realized we could give customers information and access to remedies,” Maust said.
According to Lou Pelletier, the workshop usually attracts people aged 65 and over, but many children accompany their parents for a better understanding of the information.
“We want people to know and understand their options,” he said. “Some people are learning this for the first time and we want to make sure we answer their questions.”
The father and daughter duo will teach attendees about Social Security planning, 401(k)/403B, Registered Investment Advisor (RIA), and the laws that may affect them.
“The Secure Act and the COVID-19 Cares Act are two new laws that were passed recently and it’s important that those planning for retirement understand how this affects them,” Pelletier said.
Improving the preparation of each community for the retreat (SECURED) The 2019 law was passed by former President Donald Trump. According to Congress, the law changed pension plans and the bill would raise the minimum age for required minimum distributions from 70½ to 72, allowing administrators of 401(k) plans to easier to offer annuities.
According to the US Treasury Department, COVID-19 CARE The law was signed into law in 2020 and provided rapid economic relief to American workers, industries, families and small businesses.
The duo Pelletier also explain how someone can protect their retirement home assets. Wills, Powers of Attorney and Medical Powers of Attorney will also be included in the workshop. “Life insurance and mortgages, basically everything important in retirement.” Pelletier explained. “Half of the people I meet at the workshops don’t have a will.
Prior to this event, the Pelletier Urban Planning Academy held another event at the Meriden Public Library, but no one showed up. “It was a Saturday morning at 11 a.m. and no one showed up,” Pelletier said. “It was on Medicare, which is important.”
“I’ve been teaching these workshops for many years,” Pelletier said. “About 10 years ago is when my daughter joined me. Before that, I was solo.
The couple is touring the state to hold workshops at public libraries.
Their business focuses on Medicare and Medicaid planning, Social Security/Secure Act planning, legal document review, home, auto, umbrella, life insurance, long term care insurance , investment planning, revenue planning and critical illness asset protection.
“I do this because I think a lot of this information is taught or shared correctly,” he said. “The industry has become so specialized for older people. Medicare products, income planning and asset protection planning are not treated as they should be.
