    ATLANTA — Thousands of homeowners across Georgia are facing significant damage after pipes burst over the past few days in freezing temperatures.

    In an exclusive interview, Georgia Insurance Commissioner John King spoke with Channel 2’s Elizabeth Rawlins to the historic and unprecedented damage that landlords and tenants are facing due to extreme temperatures.

    King says that even if you’ve done everything to prepare, many homes, businesses and buildings in the Atlanta metro area weren’t designed to withstand these types of cold conditions for an extended period of time.

    “This is a new challenge for consumers,” said Commissioner King.

    On Christmas Day, many people stood still, so the commissioner expects thousands of insurance claims to be filed due to flooding and broken pipes.

    “Even though it is the holidays, we are issuing a notice to all insurance companies to be responsive,” Commissioner King said.

    Since homeowners are required to have homeowners insurance, most policies will cost the cost of damages and repairs.

    However, not all renters are required to have renters insurance, which means some renters will need to cover the cost of their belongings.

    Although an increase in claims can lead to an increase in premiums, the commissioner says his office has the final say.

    “The pipe burst is a short-lived weather event,” King said. “This should not result in an unreasonable increase in rates.”
