A Lancaster County seniors’ community has announced plans to construct a new apartment building on its campus.

United Zion Retirement Community announced earlier this month that it plans to build the new facility near its main building along Furnace Hills Pike in Warwick Township. The building is expected to have approximately 47 apartments as well as a common area for campus residents.

The new building will include a fitness center, fresh dining options and additional gathering areas.

Plans call for two-bedroom, one-bedroom plus den, and one-bedroom apartments. These units will range from 700 to 1,100 square feet of space.

The final design and layout of the building will be available this winter. Applications are currently being accepted for these new units and reservations will begin in the spring. Groundbreaking for the building will take place in the fall of 2023 and residents will be able to move in in the spring of 2025.

United Zion says it has a waiting list of more than two years for its current independent residential residences.

“United Zion leadership has spent hours praying, evaluating and planning to create a vision to improve and expand our beautiful campus,” said Sue Verdegem, CEO of United Zion Retirement Community in a press release. “We see this as a much-needed project for the Lancaster County community as well as a chance to enhance the active and engaging lifestyle of campus residents.”

Officials said each residence hall is within walking distance of campus amenities, including a community hall, wellness center, chapel, restaurants, lounge and library.

“Moving into a cottage or apartment at United Zion means taking the worry out of home maintenance as helpful staff are just a phone call away,” the organization said in the press release. “In addition, cleaning is included. There are many wellness, social and educational activities on campus to keep you busy and entertained.

United Zion Retirement Community was founded in 1905 and offers residential cottages and apartments, personal care services, and skilled nursing for long-term care and short-term rehabilitation. The community is located at 722 Furnace Hills Pike near Lititz and approximately 45 minutes from Harrisburg.

United Zion has launched a fundraising campaign. The retreat will host a drop-in event from 3-5 p.m. on November 9.
