In case they needed a refresher course, the Christian Brothers Academy men’s soccer team learned a lesson on Saturday night: insurance goals are worth gold.
Luckily for the Colts, Lawrence Mancino provided it in spectacular fashion, and so they are repeat Shore champions.
That second goal proved to be all the difference, and the ABC, seeded number 3 in the NJ.com Top 20 — Picked up a 2-1 win over third-seeded and No. 15 Howell in the Shore Conference Finals at Summerfield Elementary School in Neptune.
In winning its 15th straight game after a Day 1 loss, the title was the second in as many years for the CBA and its 12th overall. Howell fell to 11-3-2 with the loss.
All three goals came in the second half and Mancino’s rebound into the right corner at 19:48 gave the Colts a 2-0 lead that would ultimately hold.
“The ball went down and I didn’t really have many scoring chances as a defender so I wanted to take one,” Mancino said. “Fortunately, I did pretty well on that one.”
