The leading professional association for financial advisers, the Investments & Wealth Institute (the Institute), has just launched a new exam and a more robust and comprehensive curriculum as part of its expanded Retirement Management Advisor program® (RMA®) Certificate.
The program enhancements are the result of an extensive job analysis conducted by Professional Testing, Inc., detailing the knowledge and skills required of retirement counseling professionals. The Institute conducted the 2022 jobs analysis, after interviewing several hundred retirement-focused financial advisors. As a result, the RMA® The certification has been expanded to cover 65 topics organized into 11 sections and three knowledge areas. The RMA Certification Commission establishes initial and ongoing certification standards to ensure that the Certified Pension Management Advisor® professionals can more effectively design retirement income plans for end clients.
“The Improved RMA® The certification was developed to be more practical, applicable, and outcome-based,” said Mike Kurz, RMA®CIMA®CPWA®PCP®CAIA®, director of the Institute’s programs. “It maintains its differentiation from other retirement income programs by being product-agnostic and client-focused. And the program now better helps advisors build reliable and sustainable income plans for clients in retirement with a new content, an expanded curriculum, new case studies, worksheets, and tools.”
The new RMA review and education curriculum will address the following detailed content:
The retirement opportunity
• The retirement landscape – critical retirement demographics and current trends, with an understanding of the role of the client and the advisor
• Retirement mindset and behavior – evolving approaches to retirement and understanding behavioral science related to finance, aging, retirement, cognitive decline and family dynamics to positively impact client actions
• The Ethics Advisor – commercial standards, regulatory requirements, notions of ethics and the code of professional responsibility
The retired customer
• Customer discovery and analysis – prudent and client-focused advisory processes and ability to create, implement, monitor and adjust retirement plans
• Retirement Readiness Assessment – Scenario planning models and optimized retirement income plans, prioritization of issues, understanding of available capital for funding goals, generation of income using assets and liabilities
• Pension risk management – approaches, concepts, categories, assessments and strategies
The technical design of the retreat
• Breakdown of the pension portfolio – planning approaches, including goal-based planning to create a repeatable process for engaging clients in retirement income planning
• Key retirement planning decisions – Social Security and Medicare strategies, as well as withdrawal policies, rules and risks
• Implementation Strategies – portfolio allocations, product selection, insurance, lending and investment vehicles specific to delivering sustainable retirement income plans
• life in transition – special situations, considerations and aging issues
• Retirement Policy Statements – roadmap for clients to take action against their retirement income plan
Applicants must meet a three-year experience requirement and pass a comprehensive background check as part of the application process. To prepare candidates to take the new comprehensive certification exam, the RMA® education program will be migrated to a new learning experience platform.
