    Better use for

    money

Wouldn’t it be nice if all those people who buy fireworks for new years only spent half of it and donated the other half to The Food Basket (https://www.hawaiifoodbasket.org/). A few less explosions would not only feed many hungry islanders, but would also be a kindness to any animals that are frightened by noise. If every year we halved the consumption of fireworks, it would soon be a firecracker.

    It could happen

    to each of us

Recently, on a walk along a wide square in the road, I found a wallet. He had a (current) female driver’s license as well as his insurance cards, bookstore credit, debit card, Costco card and some other credit cards. Her DL had her address, putting her about an hour south of Kona. There was other personal information, but nowhere was there a phone number.

I spent time with the phone book, finding others with the same last name; no help there. A house guest tried to find her on Facebook; no chance. As my visitors were on their way to Volcano, they helpfully followed up and left a note for his address. Bingo. We got in touch and everything went well. (Otherwise, I was going to take him to the police station.)

We all have insurance, hoping “it will never happen to me”. The moral of the story is this: make sure your phone number, or the number of someone who knows how to find you, is in your wallet, just in case. It wouldn’t hurt to have this detail visible on your phone as well.
