Jhe SNAP Benefits regime is about to end in many states of the United States America and it made families wonder if they would get extra food stamps than normal to help them cope with the end of the program.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program began in March 2020 to address the drop in income that millions of families were feeling as a result of the COVID-19 lockdowns and general economic crisis.
The rising cost of living and lack of wage growth that continued into 2022 meant that the program was continually renewed as it was clear that many families could not do without this extra help.
SNAP in 2023
As 2023 arrives, many families face the last month here that they will receive SNAP benefits as it will end on January 31, 2023.
For example, the South Carolina Department of Human Services says January 2023 has been approved as “transition month” for the state by the US Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition.
This means that starting February 1, residents will have to return to their regular benefit amounts which do not include SNAP food stamps.
The agency says the amount of a household’s regular benefits will not change based on the end of the emergency allowances and that the allowances are not subject to fair hearings.
SNAP recipients will be able to view their regular monthly benefit amounts starting Jan. 3 on the DSS Portal.
This could represent a worrying time for some families as they seek to understand how the change will affect their daily lives, as well as the administrative changes they will need to make to cope.
