MIAMI – A group faced charges Thursday in Miami-Dade County after a state agency investigation found they staged a car accident to defraud about 58 insurance companies $000.
Amauri Rodriguez, Orislaidy Montano, Vadira Sanchez, Ruberlandy Cruzata and Lixelly Mayari participated in the scheme, according to the Florida Department of Financial Services Division of Investigative and Forensic Services.
The state agency’s Insurance Fraud Bureau investigated the August 10 crash at the intersection of Southwest Fourth Street and 14th Avenue in Miami’s Little Havana after a police officer reported in red.
Rodriguez was driving the silver 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe that collided with the blue 2012 Volkswagen Jetta that Cruzata was driving, according to arrest reports.
Surveillance video from a streetlight camera showed the crash happened slowly, but the damage reflected excessive speed, according to arrest reports. National General and United Automobile were their insurance companies defrauded, investigators say.
Records show officers arrested Rodriguez, Montano, Mayari and Cruzata on Thursday. They each faced charges of fraudulent false insurance claims, third-degree theft and insurance fraud.
