IIf you want to know the Social Security payment schedule, here’s how it works, because those of December began to be disbursed this weekso you’ll have to keep an eye out.
First, you will receive a letter in the mail regarding your Social Security Cost of Living Allowance increase for 2023. This will include details about increasing the rate of your individual benefits for next year. You can also view benefits online using your My Social Security account.
How are Social Security payment dates determined?
The Social Security Administration sends payments on three different Wednesdays each month: the second, third and fourth. The Wednesday you receive your money depends on your date of birth. Payments for Social Security recipients typically arrive on the first day of each month.
Here’s what the payout breakdown looks like:
- If your birthday falls between the 1st and 10th of the month, your payment will be sent on second Wednesday of the month.
- If your birthday falls between the 11th and 20th of the month, your payment will be sent on third Wednesday of the month.
- If your birthday falls between the 21st and 31st of the month, your payment will be sent on fourth Wednesday of the month.
The date of payment depends on your date of birth and when you started receiving benefits.
What about Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits?
If you received Social Security benefits before May 1997, or if you receive both Social Security and SSI, the payment schedule is different.
Instead of getting paid on a Wednesday, you’ll receive your Social Security payment on the third day of each month and your SSI on the first day of each month. But these dates vary if the first or third day of the month falls on a weekend.
Here’s the December Social Security check schedule:
- 1st December: Payment for SSI recipients.
- December 2: Social Security payment for those who receive both SSI and Social Security, or who received Social Security before May 1997.
- December 14: Social Security payment for those whose birthday falls between the 1st and 10th of any month.
- December 21: Social Security payment for those whose birthday is between the 11th and 20th of any month.
- December 28: Social Security payment for people whose birthday falls between the 21st and 31st of any month.
- December 30: January Social Security payment. This check will have the COLA increase.
