ATLANTA — Georgia’s insurance commissioner has issued a warning about scammers active during this extreme cold snap.

“Their timing is incredible,” Georgia Insurance and Fire Commissioner John King said.

Sadly, it’s about grinches with good timing this holiday, con artists and criminals posing as legitimate contractors when bad weather hits.

Commissioner King says you should always call your insurance company or their office before signing any paperwork with a tree removal company or contractor.

“Anyone who comes door-to-door after a storm, you need to be mindful and, if possible, contract with local repair companies because they can’t disappear overnight,” King said. Channel 2 Consumer Investigator Justin Gray.

King says out-of-state overnight flight operators often even have business cards fresh off a local phone and an expensive bill that they promise your insurance will pay.

“What happens when the insurance company doesn’t pay the claim because it’s not warranted so they put a lien against the owner and that’s incredibly unfortunate and that’s what we’re aware,” King said.

He encourages owners to check if the company is licensed in the work for which the contract is intended.

And if there are any questions or concerns, contact his office, the State Insurance Commission: (404) 656-2070, toll free at (800) 656-2298 or email the office at [email protected]
