OOver the past week, people from California who have been struggling with financial assistance will get their first of many months $1,000 checks. This will happen over the next two years as part of the Universal Basic Income (UBI) program. Families who have been struggling with inflation and rising prices are the ones targeted by this program. People who are or are at risk of becoming homeless will receive this money, with no strings attached. Pver last week, approx. 10 to 15 households receive their first payments.
This program was designed to help all participants achieve the housing stability they have been seeking for so long. It should also help them achieve greater independence in their own lives, finances, and future. In addition to the funds, everyone who participates in this program will receive an evaluation to determine the effectiveness of this program on housing, economic stability, health and general well-being.
Who is eligible for this UBI program and how to apply?
These unconditional Payments mean the money can be spent as they see fit. These funds will be offered to those who are homeless and financially unstable. Half of those participants are referred through the San Jose County, California Coordinated Entry System. The other half comes from Si Se Puede! Collective, they are also godchildren. All eligible families will be contacted directly and approximately 150 of them will begin receiving their funds in early 2023.
