FORT MYERS, Fla. — Sherri Sammons never imagined spending five days a week in a classroom after a 45-year career in insurance sales. But sometimes that’s how life works.
For the past two years at Edison Park School of Creative and Expressive Arts in Fort Myers, Sherri has volunteered as a teaching assistant for her daughter, Maria Rose.
“She comes every day,” Maria said. “I couldn’t ask for a greater blessing.”
Sherri started volunteering after the death of her husband, Kenneth. They were married for 37 years.
In Maria’s class, Sherri found a second calling helping students learn to read, write and do math.
“When the light bulb goes out, it’s amazing,” Sherri said.
In honor of her dedication, the Florida Commissioner of Education recently announced Sherri as one of the Outstanding Volunteers of the Year for 2022.
“She deserves every moment of this honor,” Maria said. “[Students] will always remember how special Mrs. Sherri made them feel.
