Last open enrollment weekend for DC residents, the folks at DC Health Link were trying to enroll as many people as possible in an affordable healthcare plan.
“You have to engage with the people you’re trying to reach. If you don’t engage, you won’t get anywhere,” Antonio Guernica, business development manager for the DC Health Benefits Exchange Authoritysaid.
On Sunday, Guernica was at Adams Morgan at Our Lady Queen of the Americas Catholic Church, one of the weekend venues for this engagement.
“We sent emails. We call people on the phone. We follow. We are going to visit them – no matter what,” he said with a laugh. “What does it do to you?” OK, first, it keeps your family healthy… Second, it protects you from financial ruin. High medical bills are one of the main reasons people file for bankruptcy.
Masses at the church are celebrated in English and Spanish, so it’s a great place to reach the immigrant community.
The outreach effort continued at the famous Ben’s Chili Bowl on U Street NW. While tour groups came from all over for the food, atmosphere, and history, the Thompsons came for the cover.
“The process was very smooth. We learned a lot [about] how health care is going in DC and what needs to be done,” said Rich Thompson.
“I think [the effort is] hugely important because a lot of people won’t make the time or even know where to go,” said Angela Thompson.
In restaurants and at church, DC Health Link used the weekend to provide food for thought.
“We realize health insurance is not a sexy topic, but it’s very, very important,” Guernica said.
Registration closes January 31, so there’s still time to register.
“The best place to go is DChealthlink.com. There you will have all the information about what we are doing,” Guernica said.
