Mmaternity leave is defined as the time off work a mother takes after the birth of her new child.

Mothers should plan their maternity leave so that they are not faced with financial surprises and can make the most of their time with their newborn.

There are two different types of maternity leave in the United Statesmainly according to the respective policies of each company.

What are the different types of maternity leave in the United States?

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) requires most employers to grant employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid family leave after the birth of their child. The FMLA is available to men and women, as well as those adopting a child.

It allows eligible employees of covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons, with group health insurance coverage continuing under the same conditions as if the employee had no not taken leave.

The FMLA requires mothers to give their employer at least 30 days notice of their intention to take unpaid family leave.

“Leave to bond with a newborn or for a newly placed adopted or foster child must end within 12 months of the birth or placement,” reads the government’s official website.

“Use of intermittent FMLA leave for these purposes is subject to employer approval.

“If the newborn or newly fostered child has a serious medical condition, the employee is entitled to take FMLA leave to care for the child intermittently, if medically necessary and such leave does not is not subject to the 12-month limit.”

Non-compulsory maternity leave for the company

The other type of maternity leave occurs if the employer allows you to apply sick leave, vacation, and vacation time to your maternity leave.

Some of them may require you to use these benefits before you can use disability or unpaid time.

Mothers should check with their human resources department for company policies.
